Celebrities are rocking bright lips in daring shades. Here’s how.

Bright lipstick can make a look, ensuring you stand out and giving the impression of confidence. More than any other make-up product, lipstick has a transformative effect, but many women are scared off by its potential to turn them into clowns or drag queens. Read on as make-up artist Sophie Rance guides you through the dos and don’ts of bright lipstick, as worn by celebrities from Rihanna to Dita Von Teese.

How to wear bright lipstick

Jessica Chastain – shocking pink

Jessica Chastain – shocking pinkWith her red hair, Jessica Chastain rocks the clashing pink lips to perfection. This shade also works well with dark hair, just keep the rest of your make-up minimal and make sure you start with a flawless base of foundation so that your lips stand out. “The secret to wearing such a bright shade is confidence!” says Sophie.

Rihanna – deep purple

Rihanna – deep purpleFor those brave enough to rock the goth trend, deep purple is the way to go. The shade is easier to pull off if you have dark hair or skin, in which case you can get away with wearing some eye make-up too. Blondes and those with fair skin are also allowed to the goth party, but are advised to keep eye make-up light and let their lips take centre stage. “This look is beautifully dark and indulgent,” says Sophie.

Clare Danes – dark berry

Clare Danes – dark berryClare Danes gives the goth look an elegant twist by adding classic, feminine copper eye-shadow and choosing a dark, matte shade in berry rather than purple. “If you don’t want to appear too goth, feather the edges of your lips with a brush,” advises Sophie. “Alternatively, keep it sharp and release your inner Morticia Addams!”

Jessica Alba – tangerine

Jessica Alba – tangerineTropical and bold with just a hint of 80s neon, this is lipstick for the fearless. Just be sure you style it right to ensure you look edgy rather than like someone’s poodle-owning great aunt. “The key to wearing vibrant orange shades is keeping the rest of the face muted,” says Sophie. “Avoid dramatic eye-shadows and liners.”

Jennifer Lawrence – berry

Jennifer Lawrence – berry“A classic shade which goes hand in hand with a 60s cat-like eye-liner flick,” says Sophie. This juicy raspberry shade is striking but still subtle enough so wear with a full face of make-up. Add an edge by being bold with the black eye-liner.

Kerry Washington – crimson

Kerry Washington – crimson“Bold crimson lips and smoky eyes look great for a dramatic evening look, but by day, bold lips should be accompanied by subtle, ‘barely there’ make-up,” says Sophie. To make sure your lipstick stays on, use a lip-liner to define your lips before filling in the colour and remembering to blot.

Dita Von Teese – dark ruby red

Dita Von Teese – dark ruby redThis is the classic bright lipstick – classy, stylish and confident. “Dita’s trademark burlesque red lips against her pale skin create a dramatic, sexy contrast,” says Sophie. “Flawless skin is key, so use a good quality base like Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation.” Women with lighter hair colour should go easy on the eye make-up.

Stefani – pillar box red

Gwen Stefani – pillar box redA cheeky, orangey-red shade that looks great with any hair colour. “To ensure red lipstick stays put, start with a matching lip-liner then apply lipstick with a brush,” says Sophie.

Gwen Anne Hathaway – fuchsia

Anne Hathaway – fuchsia“Fuchsia lipstick is universally flattering,” says Sophie. It will draw attention to your lips but, unlike some of the other bright shades, it’s easy to wear and doesn’t make an overly dramatic statement. Wear it with well-groomed brows, brown or grey eye-shadow and a swoop of black eye-liner.

Nicki Minaj – bubblegum pink

Nicki Minaj – bubblegum pinkGet a retro, 60s look with pale pink lips. “Team this lip colour with a subtle blush like Clinique Blushing Blush in ‘Bashful Blush’ to lift pale or tired post-winter complexions,” says Sophie.
