J. D. Hayward is a professional photographer and printer whose photographs have appeared in the Best of Photography Annual and Shutterbug magazines. He lives in Pensacola, Florida.

My collection of Black & White photography books is quite extensive, including earlier publications on B&W from Amherst Media. I think they decided to take a ‘roll of the dice’ on J.D. Hayward¿s book, and have apparently come up with a fresh approach from their previous books. This is truly a hybrid book; it¿s not one of the boring Kodak manuals, but more of a cross between creative traditional photography combined with the story behind the image. He keeps the technical section clean and concise in the front of the book, and each page gives his film and development technique for the corresponding print. It¿s creative and different; as a teacher, I would recommend in to my students as a great idea book. Christopher Sherrill Cambridge, MA
