L’Air Du Temps Perfume: Review

As one of the absolute classic Nina Ricci Perfumes, L’Air Du Temps has a combination of both fragrance and emotion that continues to be relevant from generation-to-generation.  Below we will review why this perfume still has a broad popularity long after its 1948 launch:

Feeling

Saying a lot about the values of the time period when it was first brought to market, this enduring scent embodies purity, peace, love and freedom.  Developed by perfumer Francis Fabron, L’Air Du Temps is a bright and romantic perfume.  Having been called an “olfactory miracle” by Robert Ricci, it is a fragrance that puts the wearer in an angelic state of being.  When you first take the scent in, a floral bouquet tickles your senses – much like an early summer’s breeze.  This is followed up by a noble, soft sweetness that provides an unassuming romantic hint.  Finally, a caressing sandalwood base completes the experience.

Ingredients

Primary – Floral Spice

Top – Carnation and Gardenia

Mid – Centifolia Rose and Jasmine

Base – Iris and Sandalwood

Bottle Design

While it was a sun shaped bottle that helped debut the fragrance, L’Air Du Temps is known for living in an iconic twin-dove capped bottle.  It is the two doves at the top that represent the purity and freedom embraced by this perfume.  The glass of the bottle is best interpreted from the bottom up – it spirals in a mesmerizing fashion towards the two doves perched atop, as if ready to set them off in flight.  The twin-dove design first appeared in 1951, when the bottle itself was actually composed of Lalique Crystal, and has been the flagship design of this romantic perfume ever since.

Campaign

Over the years, a fragrance this established has seen its share of different campaigns.  Consistent throughout every one, however, has been the dove motif.  Throughout most of the commercial spots produced for L’Air Du Temps, it is described as “the romantic perfume”.  An example of one of these ads, below, sees a woman begin in a mansion on her own.  Upon looking deeply at a painting of a fairy tale scene, she instantly finds herself there, encountering a potential Prince Charming.

L’Air Du Temps is one of the scents that has been said to be a basis for many copy-cat fragrances within the perfume industry.  Its ingredients and positioning around purity and romance makes this a brand with staying power that is likely to endure for years to come.
